PxWeb API
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How does the PxWeb API work?
FIRST READ THESE DOCUMENTS!
https://pxnet2.stat.fi/API-description_SCB.pdf
NB: The SCB description is based on the use of a relational database, where the extension ".px" for the table name is omitted.
For statistics Finland databases allways remember to use the extension ".px" after the table name.
Example:https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin/statfin_kuol_pxt_12af.px Retrieve metadadata for a table
And a step by step explanation with pictures on how to use our API:
https://www.stat.fi/static/media/uploads/org_en/avoindata/px-web_api-help.pdf
After reading the API documents, you can study the API here:
https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/pxweb/en/StatFin
1. Select a small table and retrieve it from the PxWeb database service.
2. In the end of the table page select "Make this table available in your application", where you get
information on how to retrieve the table using the API.
Statistics Finland is offering these PxWeb databases
English: https://www.stat.fi/org/avoindata/pxweb_en.html
Finnish: https://www.stat.fi/org/avoindata/pxweb.html
Swedish: https://www.stat.fi/org/avoindata/pxweb_sv.html
API limitations:
Query the API for its configuration: https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/fi/?config
Usage examples:
You can do a free text search with the API. For example: search for "population" (URL-encoded):
https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin?query=population
Or, seach for "091" (Helsinki) from the regional codes (old code):
https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin?query=091&filter=codes
Or, seach for "KU091" (Helsinki) from the regional codes (new code):
https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin?query=KU091&filter=codes
Now with the latest version of PxWeb you can get the database structure:
https://statfin.stat.fi/pxweb/api/v1/en/StatFin/?query=*&filter=*
Study the database user interface: https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/pxweb/en/StatFin
PXWEB/API-NAME/API-VERSION/LANGUAGE/DATABASE-ID/LEVELS/TABLE-ID
https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/ Databases available
https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin Subject realms in StatFin database (levels)
https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin/kuol Tablelist (levels)
https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin/kuol/statfin_kuol_pxt_12af.px Metadata of table
With the latest version of PxWeb it is possible to omit the levels both in GET and POST (levels will still work more reliably):
https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin/statfin_kuol_pxt_12af.px
Get basic table - A POST example (only for small tables):
To test with cURL (API limited to 110 000 figures):
curl -X POST -k -i 'https://statfin.stat.fi:443/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin/kbar/statfin_kbar_pxt_11cc.px' --data '{"query": [ ],"response":{"format":"json-stat"}}'
This retrieves the basic table without the categorical (nominal) variables (sex, age ... ).
or shorter:
curl -X POST -k -i 'https://statfin.stat.fi:443/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin/statfin_kbar_pxt_11cc.px' --data '{"query": [ ],"response":{"format":"json-stat"}}'
curl -X POST -k -i 'query URL here' --data 'query here'
query and URL from here:
https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/pxweb/en/StatFin
1. Select a small table and retrieve it from the PxWeb database service.
2. In the end of the table page select "Make this table available in your application", where you get
information on how to retrieve the table using the API.
More later in this document ...

02.10.2019 BETA! Chargeable PxWeb (PX-Web) databases can now also be accessed via the API and the saved query.
Only the authentication part differs from normal PxWeb API and saved query usage.
API URL metadata (GET) example:
https://server/PXWeb/api/v1/lang/%7CUSERNAME%7CPASSWORD
Saved query URL example:
https://server/PXWeb/sq/saved_query_name%7CUSERNAME%7CPASSWORD
%7C is used as the separator
Username and password in every URL
In the API POST you must add username and password in the header:
Header name = un Header value = user name
Header name = pw Header value = password /Hb

28.01.2019 Post query error codes
The API uses https POST to retrive table data, and does not support https GET in API version 1.
Status codes and error messages:
200 - OK
404 - errors in syntax of the query or POST URL not found.
403 - blocking when querying for large data sets. The API limit is now 100,000 cells.
429 - Too many queries within a minute. The API limit is now 30 queries within 10 seconds.
503 - Time-out after 60 seconds. It may turn on, when extracting large XLSX datasets.
(We do not recommend that).

25.01.2019 New updated information on the extended PxWeb API usage (feature in beta testing)
API usage with filter
Search for date, use: filter=published
Search tables published a specific date 10.10.2018:
https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin/?query=20181010*&filter=published
So you can with this for example list all your tables "published today"
Tables published in October:
https://statfin.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin/?query=201810*&filter=published
So with this you can get for example the tables published this month
The date is OK but the time listed in the json reply is not accurate at the moment.
Tables with published later than 8.00 have been updated for one reason or another. /Hb

The API
It is possible to retrive tables with the PxWeb API (Application Programming Interface) in xlsx, csv,
json, json-stat, sdmx and PC-Axis (.px) fileformats depending on the PxWeb version.
The API is also in use at Statistics Sweden, SCB:
https://www.statistikdatabasen.scb.se/pxweb/en/ssd//.
How does the new PxWeb API work?
FIRST READ THIS DOCUMENT!
https://www.scb.se/Grupp/OmSCB/API/API-description.pdf
NB: The SCB description is based on the use of a relational database, where the extension ".px" for the table name is omitted.
For statistics Finland databases allways remember to use the extension ".px" for the table name.
Example: https://pxnet2.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin/vrm/kuol/statfin_kuol_pxt_12af.px
After reading the API description document, you can study the API here:
https://pxnet2.stat.fi/PXWeb/pxweb/en/StatFin
1. Select a small table and retrieve it from the PxWeb database service.
2. In the table window select the second tab, "About table". In the end of the
tab page, click "Make this table available in your application", where you get
information on how to retrieve the table using the API.
Available databases on a PxWeb server:
https://pxnet2.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/
https://pxnet2.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/fi/
https://pxnet2.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/sv/
API free text search:
You can do a free text search with the API. For example: search for "population" (URL-encoded):
https://pxnet2.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin?query=population
Or, you can search for population under the subject area "vrm" (population):
https://pxnet2.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin/vrm?query=population
Or, seach for "091" (Helsinki) from the regional codes:
https://pxnet2.stat.fi/PXWeb/api/v1/en/StatFin?query=091&filter=codes
Classifications and codes used in the tables: https://tilastokeskus.fi/meta/luokitukset/index_en.html
Subject realms and codes used in the tables: https://tilastokeskus.fi/til/aihealuejako_en.html
Names of statistics and their codes: https://www.stat.fi/org/avoindata/json/tilastot.html
Basic use of the API:
How to query the API for its configuration.
